Transportation

- Get city day tickets online or via ticket machines at airport or railway station for taking city local trains, busses or trams.
- Walk along exploring the beautiful old city streets.

My recent visit was in January 2026 by train from Munich. I love trains and all my visits to Salzburg were by Train from Munich. It's a scenic ride as the train winds through the Alps and crosses border in to Austria. Salzburg is right after the border crossing.

I went along with colleagues from work. Upon reaching, we had a quick snack & hot coffee at the train station. It was cold & cloudy as expected in January. We took a day ticket and by bus reached the Mirabell Palace & gardens after a short ride.

After some photo ops we walked via the beautiful streets towards the Hohensalzburg fortress. Crossed the Salzach river over the beautiful Marko-Feingold-Steg pedestrian bridge. This offers amazing views of the city and the fortress ahead.

We walked in the narrow yet lovely streets of the old town and walked up the road to the Hogensalzburg fortress. The funicular railway was closed due to snow on rails & its path. But the walk was equally rewarding with enchanting view of the old town.

We climbed up to the top of the tower which offered 360 degrees view of the city.
Spent quite a bit of time there and the castle and explored the old town with a visit to the birth place of Mozart. Then headed back to the train station. Since it was winter it became cold and the daylight was receding already at 4pm we called it a day with a promise to return again.

Please watch "Sound of Music" movie if you haven't. Then you can relate to the pictures below more closely.
