Tegernsee - A Blue Pearl
Tegernsee - A Blue Pearl
Tegernsee is a picturesque lake town nestled in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, south of Munich. The town can be accessed by car from Munich in about an hour and by train in 1.5 hours, with hourly services running between Munich and Tegernsee.
This is my experience during my visit in January 2026 to this amazing place from Munich.
I took the RB57 train from Munich's main station, Hauptbahnhof. Although it was cold, there was no snow in Munich, but upon entering the Alps, the scenery transformed, with plenty of snow and increasingly breathtaking views. I was lucky to get a window seat and I couldn't get my eyes of the vistas which were emerging after every turn the train was taking as it snaked towards the alps.
Tegernsee lake revealed itself all of a sudden as the train came down from a crest and took a turn prompting a collective gasp of wonder at the spectacular sight. It was magical, the pearl blue water glistening in the morning sun. RB57 slowly rolled to a stop at a a cute little station of Tegernsee. It was a small, quite station overlooking the lake on one side and lovely houses on the other. I disembarked at Tegernsee Station. Being a train enthusiast, I couldn't help spending some time admiring the pleasing setting of this nice station before proceeding.
I strolled down towards the lake shore, passing by the charming cottages & streets which looked very pretty. The town was situated on the edge of the lake, with mountains providing a stunning backdrop.
I reached a viewpoint on the lake shore, and the views were nothing short of enchanting. Although it was cold and windy, the sun shone brightly with clear skies, and a light mist rose from the snow on the banks making the view straight of a fairytale.
The lake was surrounded by mountains, and a walking path encircles its entire circumference. The lake is large with 7 km in length and 2 km wide at its widest point. A few small villages are nestled around the lake. This is the ideal thing to do, walk along the nice pathway and enjoy the scenery. I walked along the bank for quite some time, taking in the views. The time seemed to slow down as I took in as much vistas as I can.
The Sun was bright and warm against the cold wind blowing from the lake. After soaking in the views, I walked into the town, had a snack at an Indian restaurant called Taj Mahal, and took the return train back to Munich.
